The giacomogiacomo commits itself to building a dormitory for the guys attending the high school in Ongata Rongai.
Why a dormitory? There are very few schools in the suburbs of Nairobi; often the students live outside the city or in any case very distant. The boys and girls who attend the schools during the day should then walk home in the evening after the sunset, most of the time on foot as they cannot afford the “matatu” (small bus). This is why along with the Evangeling Sisters of Mary (the order of nuns that runs the school) it was thought it was better to give the guys with more economic and logistical difficulties the possibility to sleep in the compound. This way makes sure the guys will go back to school the next day and do not give up because of the distance or the laziness; in fact it is certainly easier to follow them if they are close and also more safe especially for the young girls who otherwise would have found themselves walking alone on the street after the sunset. Another very important reason is to guarantee two meals a day, one for lunch during the lessons and one in the evening before going to bed.
When? The project started in June 2008 and ended in May 2010. Currently it hosts more than half of the students attending the high school.
